Holy Cross Lutheran Academy Celebrates 10 Years in the Sanford
Full Description:
SANFORD, FL – Holy Cross Lutheran Academy (www.theHCLA.org) is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in the Lake Mary/Sanford Community. The HCLA began as a Daycare and Preschool facility in September, 1999 as an outreach of Holy Cross Lutheran Ministries in Lake Mary, Florida. Since then, HCLA has grown steadily during the last decade, and is now a full service Christian Education facility serving infants through Grade 8 with 118 enrolled students and 80 children in child care.
Every autumn, Holy Cross Lutheran Academy has a theme for the school year. This year’s theme is “Love in Action” with a special focus to teach students that they can show love through serving and doing for their friends and neighbors. HCLA will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a plan to participate in 10 Community Service Projects throughout the school year – an initiative called “10 for 10.” Director of Education, Betty Hoyer, says that “Holy Cross Lutheran Academy is a school where the focus is more on learning than teaching. Our 10 for 10 program provides students an opportunity to put into action what they have learned about Christian community in a very positive and tangible way.”
The students began their service projects at Crane’s Roost, Altamonte Springs, with a Walk-a-thon fundraiser in September for the Longwood Sharing Center. A total of $1,695 was raised for the Academy’s Scholarship Program, with over 20 walkers participating. Upcoming events include the HCLA Golf Classic in October, donating a decorated Christmas tree to the Lake Mary Historical Society in November, preparing food baskets for the Longwood Sharing Center and Lake Cares Food Shelf (Mount Dora) in November, and gathering gift shoeboxes and visiting seniors housed in assisted living facilities and nursing homes in December.
In January, 2010, students will be collecting blankets for the homeless. Another service opportunity will include the “Jump for Your Heart” fundraiser in February, 2010, benefiting the American Heart Association. In addition, students in grades 7 and 8 have implemented an aggressive re-cycling program for the entire academic year and continuing on into the future.
HCLA offers two outstanding preschool and childcare programs, half day and full day, as well as an Elementary Education program Kindergarten through 8th grade at two campuses in Sanford and Lake Mary, Florida. HCLA is fully accredited through the Association of Independent Schools of Florida (AISF) and the Southern Association of Colleges and schools (SACS).
